Romeo and Juliet Reinvention Project (Exhibition Project)
1. Provide a picture of the actual final product in this project.
2. Who was in your group? What was it like working with the group?
My group consisted of Anna Ryburn, Natalie Au, Jasmin Diaz and Elijah Miller. This group was hard working and was always enthusiastic about the project. Many great ideas came out of our many work-meetings.
3. What did you make in this project? What are a few things you learned?
In this project, we studied world conflicts and recreated the romeo and Juliet play as if it were in one of those conflicts. We made re-written scenes, costume sketches, weapons from the conflict, blueprints and a whole variety of written pieces. A learned a bunch of things about my conflict (French Revolution) and my weapon, which included the height of the Guillotine, (14 ft) the cause of the conflict, (peasant uprisings) and just some facts about the Revolution as a whole.
4. What well in this project?
My group did a very good job morphing the Romeo and Juliet play into our conflict, which was the French Revolution. The history of the conflict provided many interesting paths that we could take with the play. Although we changed it around a bit, we still kept the element of the original play to keep it recognizable.
5. What struggles did you have and how did you overcome them?
A struggle that I had was keeping work organized and figuring out what needed priority. I sometimes got so overwhelmed with work, I forgot about some pieces until the day they were due. I overcame this by making a list of everything that needed to be done during that week and checking things off as I went.
6. What things did you do well concerning work ethic and what could you improve on?
I tried to make all of my work the best and help out others, but often, I realize that I could be forgetful and maybe a little bossy when things get tense. I need to learn how to cool down. Also, I don’t often trust others with completing group assignments, since there is a little part of me that only trusts my own abilities. I need to learn how to step back and let others take over for a change.
7. How would you change this project?
I would have let the students rewrite the whole play or at least make a comic. Doing the whole thing would have allowed us to complete more elaborate sketches and more costumes designs. I know that it would be a LOT harder, but it would be so much fun! (And then we have the actors perform the plays.)
8. Describe your Humanities learning during this project. What did you learn? What will you take away with you? Is there anything you wish you could have explored more?
I’ve learned about the meanings of evil, the mistakes of the past and the possibilities for the future during this project. Learning about these conflicts and finding connections between them allowed us to see why conflicts are often started. I’ll take away the knowledge of my topic, as well as some information I’ve picked up from others. I wish that we could have explored more on the actual history of the conflicts, but I also feel like we already did a lot of research on the subject.
9. Describe your Physics learning during this project. What did you learn? What will you take away with you? Is there anything you wish you could have explored more?
My physics learning during this project revolved around a weapon, so it was pretty interesting. I learned how the Guillotine functions, where it was used, who built it and its significance to the conflict it was used in. I will take away the knowledge of how to actually build one, as well as the fun facts I picked up while researching. Although my group and I did a lot of research on the guillotine, I wish we could have explored more about its not-so-bad side. (In other words, the transformation) We didn’t get to spend much time on that.
10. BRIEFLY answer the driving questions of the project were, now that the project is completely over: What is good? What is evil? Can good ever overcome evil? Is man doomed to repeat history or can he learn from his mistakes?
Good is being empathic and doing selfless acts. Evil is bringing unnecessary mental or physical harm on someone. Good and evil are balanced, and are either strong against one another or weak. If there is a small amount of good in a nest of evil, it can grow and bring hope. If there is a small amount of evil in a pool of good, it can spread and infect others. Man isn’t yet doomed to repeat history, but if we continue down the path of ignorance and don’t learn from our mistakes, we will be.
